And the pony has sparklies!

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. It's true that sometimes you just have to plow through when drafting and leave the revisions for later. Otherwise you'll never get to where you're going (or at least I wouldn't.)

It is so true that revising is where the real writing comes in. My issue is I get caught up revising what I've just written instead of plowing ahead. Giving myself a deadline is helping to curb that. Kind of.

Wow, this comment was pretty boring considering the morphine I'm on. I mean, you would have expected me to get off topic and throw in something random or, at the very least, have a few run-on sentences that make zero sense. Phew! Really glad I avoided all of those. Hey look, a pony...

I completely understand your revision stages, and I'm right there with you. During the middle phase (hate-hate-hate) I keep reminding myself of the goal and how FUN it is to get the gem out of there. Thanks for stopping by.

I go through three stages with revisions. Excitement, hatred, and joy/relief (I know it seems like two at the end there, but it's really one. Just go with it.) When I start 'em, I'm excited because I know the story will be *so* much better when they're done. After a few days, I hate them. Hate, hate, hate. Mostly because it takes so long...as you say, every word and sentence has to be turned over and picked at to find the gem (hopefully) hidden inside. It's tedious for me, and I often do rush, but I try not to push so fast I miss too many things.

Then the joy/relief comes when I'm finished and I can send it off to be edited, knowing that nothing else in the process will take as long as the revisions. Nothing. Which makes me incredibly happy.

Then I get excited about the next draft waiting to be revised, and the cycle starts again...

Great post. :-)

But the whole mining analogy, good lady, is wonderful. Well said!
