I think it was more to torture you than anything. Why would bats, who don't like to be out in the light go after shiny things???? But I would keep the cap handy, for a couple of reasons... you never know when their navigation system might get thrown off and they could accidentally become entangled in hair, and (this is probably the more important one) getting pooped on by a bird is gross, but bat guano is a whole 'nother league. ;-)

When I was little, we'd go camping around a river that was surrounded by caves. The bats would swarm at sunset and my brother always scared me with the "they'll go for your hair and get caught up in it so you better put on a hat." It wasn't a nesting story, more of a "they-go-for-shiny-things-and-you're-blonde kind of deal. No idea if it's true or if he was just torturing me for fun, but to this day, I have a baseball cap handy when going to the lake for this very reason. :-)
