The below is the press release sent out via PR.com re: the Pearson Prize contest honors for Nowhere Feels Like Home.

It’s official. For the second year in a row, LK Griffie has garnered Pearson Prize Teen Choice award honors with her late 2009 release, Nowhere Feels Like Home. The second book in the Misfit McCabe series captures the tumultuous emotions of the teen years through the struggles of fourteen-year-old Katie McCabe as she copes with grief and anger. By inviting teens to select their favorite books for the contest, The Pearson Prize excites teens about reading.

Author LK Griffie specializes in teen literature and Nowhere Feels Like Home continues the story of rebellious Katie. Stuck in bed with a broken ankle and reeling from the loss of her father, her home, and life as she knew it, Katie must deal with her anger toward the town bully and a world that’s fallen apart. Teens identify with Katie’s emotional journey to fit into a new school, a new home, and a new family.

The Pearson Prize Teen Choice Award started in 2008 as a way to engage Montreal teenagers in reading books. The brain child of Michael Earnest Sweet, the prize also serves as a way to bring in books for teens to read on a limited budget. Authors donate books as their entrance fee to the contest, the teens get books to read, and the authors get recognition.

LK Griffie says, “I am thrilled to have my work selected as a winner in the 2010 Pearson Prize Teen Choice awards and overjoyed that the students continue to enjoy my work and can connect with Katie.” For more information on Nowhere Feels Like Home and LK Griffie, visit www.lkgriffie.com. The Misfit McCabe series is available on Amazon.com. For more information about the Person Prize, visit www.pearsonprize.org.

Pearson Prize Teen Choice Award contest is held annually in Montreal, QC to help promote reading and obtain books for the schools. Nowhere Feels Like Home is a young adult novel and one of the 2010 Pearson Prize winners.

Just slightly over a week ago, I went to Glamour Shots to have some pictures taken because I need a professional shot to have made into a poster for the upcoming LA Times Festival of Books, April 24th and 25th at UCLA. My signing times are 10-11 both days for anyone who is interested. If you want to read about my photo shoot experience, click here. Anyway, knowing that I am probably the last person able to pick the best picture for a poster, I decided to let you help me pick by voting for your favorite pic out of the ones I selected to narrow the field down. Now I realize that a couple of the pics listed are probably not right for an author poster, but I had to include them, just because I liked them. Sooooo, help me out – which of the following pics should be my poster for the book festival?

Yesterday signified day 1 of the last 100 days of 2009. It’s hard to believe we have almost lived through a decade of the new millennium. Of course, when someone pointed out that was all the time left in the year, it put my mind on the track of what will I accomplish before the year ends? So, what will I do with my hundred days? Let me get out the crystal ball and we’ll see.

First goal to come to mind is to write the third book in the Misfit McCabe series. Ideas for the book have been plaguing me while I have been going through the editing and proofreading process on Nowhere Feels Like Home trying to get it ready to launch. I have been forcing myself not to work on the new material until I have finished with the other because I know what would happen. I would start working on the new book, become consumed by it, and Nowhere Feels Like Home would languish on my hard drive waiting for me to finally get back to put the polishing touches on it. Then I would have two books waiting for my editing attention, and my attention span just isn’t up to it. It would become a vicious cycle and I’d end up never finishing any of them.

Which, of course, leads me into the second goal which is to finish putting the polish on Nowhere Feels Like Home so it can get out there. I not only need to proofread it again once the proof copy arrives (tomorrow?), but will also need to convert it into ebook format for Smashwords.com as well as format it for the Kindle. Along the same lines, my third goal is to publish the second edition of Misfit McCabe and reformat it for Kindle and retire the first edition, both paper and ebook format.

One other goal is to start getting my books out there as donations to teen shelters and children’s hospitals. With the holidays coming up, the timing should be perfect and it does make me feel good to hear of someone who connected with the story who wouldn’t have otherwise had the opportunity to read the book.

My last goal is to spread a little holiday cheer. Of course, that is always a goal at this time of the year. I love the holiday season and enjoy the spring in my step and the joy of giving. I always feel so very fortunate for the things I have in my life, and like to spread the good feeling around.

What I’ll really need the crystal ball for is to see whether or not I will be able to accomplish all of my goals (except for the holiday cheer – that’s a given). The writing of book 3 does not include the editing of the book, only the completion of the first draft writing. I would make myself insane trying to accomplish the editing in this same time frame. I enjoy goal setting because without goals how do you know whether you’re accomplishing anything? By setting the goal and making it time-bound, I increase my chances of succeeding.

So, what did I accomplish on day 1 of my challenge to myself? Absolutely nothing. A friend and I went to Dana Point and floated in a pool for the entire afternoon. It was a great way to beat the heat, and I desperately needed the mental break. Because of taking the time to relax, today I’m revved up and ready to tackle my challenges (and trying not to panic because there only 98 days left of the year after today). The starting point? Outlining the plot. I have begun.

I have been working so hard on getting Nowhere Feels Like Home edited and ready for publication, that I feel a little like I have been hiding in a cave somewhere only able to attend to those things which were absolutely necessary. I have now tied it up with a bow and am waiting on my ISBN so I can move on to the next part which is getting a proof copy to ensure everything looks the way it should. Then I need to get the ARC (Advance Reader Copies) out making the rounds to get some reviews, and then, just maybe I can put this book to press.

In the meantime, while I’m waiting, I need to get the book trailer started and I have been itching to get going on the next book in the series. It still amazes me that I am in the middle of writing a series because when I originally wrote Misfit McCabe, it was supposed to be a stand alone book. Now, I’m so embroiled in the story line, I don’t know where it’s going to stop. I know what I hope to accomplish with book three, but whether I will get everything in this upcoming book or not will be the question. I tend to have some grandiose ideas about what I will be writing before I actually do the writing. Then I sit down, go into the writing zone, and the next thing I know I’m coming out of the fog, looking around, and realize I only covered about half of what I had intended to. The book just went in its own direction. I guess that’s okay because I just have more storyline to throw into the next book. Although, I would like to finish this series up so I can get on to some other writing projects which are waiting for my attention.

I will also be working on getting the second edition of Misfit McCabe ready for release, and need to work on the Kindlized versions of both books. Then I will need to jump on the marketing merry-go-round again (I don’t think you ever really get off that one though.) Just the thought of everything that has to get done makes me feel like running back to the cave.

The moment strikes and it’s like a frission in your brain. Your heart starts pumping faster. You have the sensation of fireworks going off in your head. Pleasure radiates through your entire body until it reaches the point where you want to start screaming, “Yes. Yes. YES!” And you want to throw your head back and laugh with pure joy. It’s one of the best feelings in the world.

You’ve just had an epiphany. Some little bit that had been bothering you about your writing just surfaced and you finally know how you’re going to handle it. Maybe it’s a plot point that you couldn’t get your mind around. Maybe a new character surfaces. Maybe it’s a bit of dialogue the provides the perfect end to a scene. Whatever it is, once you have the epiphany, it seems like the creative flood gates open and you are ready to WRITE!

I love when it happens. For a writer it is the ultimate part of the creative process. Sometimes it happens when you are not actively struggling with a concept. It happened for me this morning. I was going along, on my way to work, when BAM it happens. I suddenly know the one thing that will tie Nowhere Feels Like Home together and put a big bow on it. I wasn’t even thinking of the book at the time, and the answer was only one word that floated through my mind, and then suddenly the whole concept was there right in front of me ready to scoop up. Now all I have to do is find the right place in the book to insert a scene or two and make it happen. Sometimes being a writer is very good.

I even wrestle with Elsa from time to time to keep her happy. I sit on Papa’s lap when he’s watching TV, and keep his chair warm when he goes to get something to eat, or play with his airsoft gun. I sit beside Mama when she’s working on her books, so I can offer some suggestions to help keep the story flowing. But, now, I’ve had enough.

Mama got a Kindle 2 and she hasn’t let me even put a paw on it yet. The K2 is so cute – sleek and petite, just like me. It looks really easy to operate, but I haven’t been given a chance yet. Think how much easier it would be for me to turn the pages. I could even use my nose if necessary. She’s had it for weeks now, and has been reading story after story on the K2, but I get bupkiss. Last night, I crawled into her arms while she was reading, just so I could get a closer look at the screen. It was wonderful. Nice easy to read font, easy to turn pages, and especially nice for me, you can set the cursor next to a word you don’t know and have the definition pop up at the bottom. I was enthralled. Now, I’m really itching to get my paws on it. So the big question is, Mama, when is it my turn?

All for now. Until next time. Paws Up!

PS – If she lets Elsa touch it before me, I’m going to sit on Elsa’s head.

Starting Memorial Day weekend, I took a two and a half week stay-cation, and expected to be able to work on the editing of Nowhere Feels Like Home, but life doesn’t always turn out as expected. I didn’t even open up the file the entire time I was home. I’ve had a few other things going on and the writing has been put on the shelf for the moment.

I actually think that it is a good thing because I have been pushing myself to finish and without this little break, I would most likely have forced myself to tie it up in a bow and call it done. I hit the point where I was ready to be done with the work, while the work is not ready to be done. It is these times when the right thing to do is put the work on the shelf and walk away. When I’m pushing to finish is the exact time when the worst things can happen to my work. I can gut things that should stay, I can add things that shouldn’t be there. This way, neither author or characters get hurt.

So while the manuscript sits on its figurative shelf, I wait for the siren call that is sure to come. The music may start softly and then will build with time until I can no longer stand to be away from the story line and the characters within. Will I miss the first notes of the siren song through inattention? Or will they come to me clearly, calling my name, and luring me back into the depths of editing? When I hear the song, it will be the right time. The time to pick the manuscript up, dust it off and dive into the pages and make the necessary changes. I will once again transform into the writer, where little else matters in the world except my story. So, Katie, I’m waiting to hear those first whispered notes. Sing to me Katie McCabe and call me back to the place I long to be.

The day dawned gloomy and overcast. After the mini-heat wave which gave us a taste of the summer weather to come, we were glad to have a bit of a chill in the air. After loading the car up, Denny and I headed out to make the 80 mile drive down to the San Diego Children's Book Festival. I, for one, was hoping the weather would stay a little on the chilly side. A little gloom never hurt anyone, and I tend to melt in the heat. As we were approaching San Diego, horror of horrors, precipitation was falling out of the sky and landing on my windshield. I didn't want the weather to be that gloomy.

After the mini-heat wave which gave us a taste of the summer weather to come, we were glad to have a bit of a chill in the air. After loading the car up, Denny and I headed out to make the 80 mile drive down to the San Diego Children’s Book Festival. I, for one, was hoping the weather would stay a little on the chilly side. A little gloom never hurt anyone, and I tend to melt in the heat. As we were approaching San Diego, horror of horrors, precipitation was falling out of the sky and landing on my windshield. I didn’t want the weather to be that gloomy.

We arrived at the book festival, which was held in a location where no GPS could find, nor MapQuest or Google Maps. According to one of the other authors who attended, the only site which had proper directions was Yahoo. I put the approximate address in the GPS and decided that once we got off the freeway, I’d pull off and we could pull up the internet really quick to see if we could find better directions. It turned out that wasn’t necessary as the festival coordinators had the way marked very well with signs. We parked at the Library and then walked across the street. Although a short distance, the walk was quite lengthy as the area was fenced in and there appeared to be one way in and one way out, which included going to the far edge of the parking lot (for authorized people only), then back through the parking lot to the stairs (or ramp) and then to your booth. The AuthorsDen booth was along the backside of the park where the book festival was being housed, and toward the street end, so as the crow flies it wouldn’t have been far at all. We dropped off the first load of stuff and I sent Denny on ahead and told him I’d meet him at the car. He had quite a bit of a headstart and decided to go back the way we came in. I figured there had to be a shorter way, and sure enough I found it. Denny was surprised to see me coming from the opposite direction and catching up to him as he prepared to cross the street.

The weather did manage to make a turn for the better during my signing and the gloomy clouds gave way to sunshine and a nice breeze. Denny and I found a nice table under an awning to have our lunch to get me out of the sun for a bit. I also had to go back to the car and get my floppy orange hat that I wear to the Titan games on Sundays to keep my from getting too much sun on my face. (We had already put sunscreen on before arriving at the event.)

My signing times were 10:00 – 10:30 and 3:00 – 3:30, so since the festival opened at 10:00, I was the first one up. I brought my laptop so that I could play my book trailer for Misfit McCabe, which worked out fairly well. Unfortunately, unlike the LA Times Festival of Books, at the opening of the San Diego Book Festival, actual customers were sparse. Afterward people did start coming in and there were a fair number of people in attendance. There were a lot of families with young children, moms and their small children, and babies in strollers everywhere. What was interesting was that while there were children’s books and children’s authors there, we did see quite a few young adult books on display and young adult authors, however, the actual young adults in attendance were very meager.

Denny and I took the opportunity of this being a smaller venue than the LA Times festival and caught a few of the featured talks on the stage. DJ McHale spoke about his Pendragon series and he was quite entertaining to listen to. DJ also read an exerpt of chapter 1 from a new series that he is working on. To me it sounded much more like a prologue than chapter 1, but as he explained it was a very rough draft. I gave him credit for having the guts to share something at that stage of the writing process, something he confessed he had never done before. I’m not sure I would have the courage to do that. We also sat in on the session of Mad Science, and that had a great deal of audience participation. The Mad Science guy (sorry I don’t know his name as we caught it after it started) was choosing kids from the audience to come up and help him, and every time he asked for volunteers, a young teen in a bright pink shirt with a paperbag hat decorated with caution tape practically leapt out of her chair to stick her hand in the air. Unfortunately, he simply was choosing from the next to the back row, and her hopes of being selected continued to be dashed. As he was winding his show up, he asked for volunteers, and of course, her hand shot straight into the air, and Denny and I then put our hands in the air and began to point at her. She was so excited to have been chosen for the task. So, you’re welcome, Danielle.

Even though I didn’t make any sales, the day was not a total loss. I was glad to have the chance to reconnect with children’s author Mary Coe and to meet her family, as well as meet and talk with authors Janice Lease, Gayle Martin, and Shirley Woods. I also made some additional contacts while handing out more bookmarks. As with most things in the authorship game, you cast out your offerings and don’t know whether or not there will be any returns until later. One good contact made was with Edward Pyne of the Union Herald Tribune. Edward saw Denny and I walking by with our t-shirts which have the Where in the World is Misfit McCabe? map on the front, and a picture of the cover for Nowhere Feels Like Home on the back, and he was intrigued. We chatted for a few moments and the end result is that Edward is in the process of starting up a new website which will have author interviews, and after he gets the website up and running, he would like to interview me. Which, if it comes to pass, will be quite exciting.

Today has been a somewhat strange day. I started off laughing this morning over a video by Jackson Pearce about the line editing process. Since I am in the middle of that process with Nowhere Feels Like Home, I can completely relate to it. So, the day started off well enough, and then as the day wore on, it started to lose its bubbles. While I was working, I noticed I kept getting email notifications of new people following me on Twitter. It happens once in awhile, but today was extraordinary. Being at work, I didn't have time to check it out and see why I was getting so many followers. In fact, I didn't have time to do much more than think wow, that's a lot of followers.

Being at work, I didn’t have time to check it out and see why I was getting so many followers. In fact, I didn’t have time to do much more than think wow, that’s a lot of followers.

On my way home, I had reached that point where I was sure Nowhere Feels Like Home was an unsalvageable mess and I might as well scrap it. Fortunately, I’ve been writing long enough to know this mood and realize that’s all it is, a phase that I will get through. I usually hit it when I have finished the novel, have done the first blush editing and now face the nitty gritty work of going through word by word – knowing there is a lot that has to be redone. The evil little goblin on my left tells me to just give up, while the angel on my right tells me to hang in there, I can do better. After a few days of heavy procrastinating, I’ll force myself to buckle down and will become immersed in the book once more and you won’t be able to get me away from it.

Arriving home, I was a little down. And once I brought email up again, I remembered the whole, strange Twitter follow thing that was going on, and it still was. More and more follower notifications kept popping into my inbox. There were so many, I was beginning to wonder whether I should be getting paranoid. Instead, I headed on over to Twitter to find out what was going on. Still clueless, it wasn’t until I saw a tweet by @CarolHousel telling me I made a Mashable and then suddenly the world made sense once again. Cameron Chapman created a list of the 100+ Best Authors on Twitter, and I made the list under Children’s and Young Adult. I am definitely honored to have made the list. And it does explain the upsurge in followers. Now, all of a sudden, I’m back up in the clouds, and everything seems possible. Even finishing the editing on Nowhere Feels Like Home, (but not this weekend). ***I know the butterfly doesn’t have anything to do with this post – I just thought it was pretty.***

This mother and daughter duo run the acclaimed Wonderland Bakery in Newport Beach, CA. Allyson recognized her passion for food at a very early age and has been encouraged in her endeavors by her entreprenurial and visionary mother, Sondra.
Although sounding quite tasty, what does this have to do with books? While attending the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, April 25-26, my attention was captured by one of the author’s marketing materials. The author just so happened to be participating in the AuthorsDen.com booth along with me, so I had ample opportunity to see the marketing materials, and drool. The most interesting aspect to me was that the author, Allyson Ames was using her book, Wonderlicious ~ The Enchanting and Delicious Story of Wonderland Bakery as a means of marketing her Wonderland Bakery. Along with the book, Allyson and Sondra had aprons, shirts, a cupcake purse, a castle tote, a tea set, a cupcake bake set, along with enchanting wands in blue and pink. But the item that captured the most attention was the Gund bear which reads the Wonderlicious story, a definite must have item among the pre-school set. And as an added bonus, each purchase was accompanied by a Wonderland Bakery cookie. Sweet!

The absolute best thing these very savvy women did was to send an Allyson character to walk around with the book and the bear talking to children and showing how the bear reads the story. Meanwhile, her compadre was quickly passing out flyers to help promote the bakery and direct people to the AuthorsDen.com booth where they might sell a few of the accessorial products. Could you resist that smile?

We, as writers, focus so much of our time and energy on promoting our books through traditional methods such as book fairs, bookstores, and libraries, we may be overlooking a golden opportunity. It’s time to pull out those creative thinking caps and dream up a kind of marketing strategy in reverse whereby you find another product or activity to promote which leads right back to your primary product of books. The Ames women have provided a shining example in using a book festival to promote a bakery, without pitching a cookbook or putting on a cooking demonstration. What is your Wonderland?

The Wonderlicious Cookbook is due out Spring 2009.

I have received my order of books, have business cards, bookmarks, hand out cards, and posters. And I designed t-shirts for both Denny and I to wear at the event with the Misfit McCabe traveling book site (Where in the World is Misfit McCabe?) information on the front and the cover of Nowhere Feels Like Home on the back framed by Coming Summer 2009. I not only have bookmarks that reflect the current cover of Misfit McCabe but have designed a new bookmark which reflects both books in the series. The new bookmark front is pictured to the left.

I have created and sent off the 8×10’s of the Misfit McCabe book cover and the review by the Lulu Book Review, although to be perfectly honest, those nearly escaped my attention and I had to send Denny down to Ramona to deliver them to the post office there so they would be on time. The only thing left to do is make up and print out some flyers and that shouldn’t take me too long.

The good news is on the weather front, it appears that the current heat wave should be dissipating to cooler temperatures for the weekend, but we haven’t yet seen the cool down start. I will remain hopeful that I won’t be spending the entire weekend outside in 100 plus degree heat. Leaving work the past two days has been like walking out into a wet blanket. I shudder to think what summer time will be if this is spring.

———————————————————————————————–
