Sloth on a Shelf – Day 8

After scaling the tree and the journey to find the child, Sergio decided he was due for the time-honored tradition of a coffee break. And being the elfish sloth that he is, he put his own spin on it.

I heard him muttering while he searched through the closet, then the sounds of a leather case being dragged across the floor. He had pulled out the projector. Thinking he meant to watch a cartoon, I went into the kitchen to make a cup of tea. After pouring the hot water into my cup, I took a peek. Sergio was projecting a snowy scene on the opposite wall. Interesting. While I finished preparing my tea, I heard his footsteps on the stairs followed by a soft thumb. Curious, I had to see what was going on.

He had brought his pillow downstairs along with a Christmas blanket — with Santa, of course — and had set them up in front of the wall the image was being projected on. There he sat, Elf-King of the pillow top, blanket over the pillow, drinking out of his sloffee cup. When I asked if he was enjoying his break he said he was.
Sergio: I thought I’d see how it felt to be a North Pole elf on break, sitting in the forest, enjoying the smells and sounds, but I had to put a pillow down so I didn’t freeze my tushy off.

And there you have a perfect example of Sergio logic. He works harder than anyone I know to have a work break.

Sloth on a Shelf – Day 7

After the BIG adventure of scaling the HUGE six foot Christmas tree, Sergio decided he needed to follow the footsteps of the Wise Men and seek out the baby.
Me: (Trying to keep a straight face) You’re going to travel to Bethlehem to find the baby Jesus?
Sergio: Don’t be ridiculous. Jesus would be all grown up by now and really, really old if the priests like Caiaphas hadn’t demanded Pontius Pilate have his soldiers nail Jesus to a cross. He died, you know.
Me: Yes. It was very sad that people had to hate so much because they were afraid of someone who only meant them good.

Sergio sat for a few moments, lost in thought, his furry brow wrinkled, while I watched the gears spinning behind his big, dark eyes. After a few minutes, he scratched behind his ear, knocking his hat a little cockeyed.
Sergio: I’m confused though … I can’t figure it out.
Me: Since he wasn’t telling me. What?
Sergio:Well (he drew the word out) Jesus came back from the dead …
I opened my mouth to respond, but Sergio continued.
Sergio:That part I get. It’s like a bear hibernating in a cave and sleeping like the dead. They never said whether he was well-rested, though.
I could just imagine a sermon given by Sergio at Easter time and the reaction of the parishioners. And after Jesus hibernated in the cave and woke from his nap, he rolled away the stone …
Sergio: But they also never said he died again … just that he ascended into heaven.
His eyes grew shiny and a smile lit his face.
I know! Santa came by in his sleigh and picked Jesus up and took him off to the North Pole because it was closer to heaven.

Me: Desperately trying to bring the conversation back on track before I laughed hysterically — I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. So if you’re not looking for baby Jesus, then what baby are you seeking out?
Sergio: The angel baby, Angelica!

Next thing I knew, he scampered up the stairs and crawled up next to Angelica in the bed. When I followed him into the room, Sergio grinned.
Sergio: Since Angelica is a baby and Christmas is about finding the baby, Santa will know I’m trying to reach him when he finds out I’ve been spending time with the best baby in the house. Besides, she’s dressed like Saint Nicholas, so that has to earn me extra points!

I just shook my head. What can you do with a sloth elf, except enjoy the ride.

Sloth on a Shelf – Day 5

Sergio informed me that HE would be the one to put the star on the tree and no other. Because the STAR would light the way for Santa to find us. I assured him that with ALL the lights we now had throughout the house, there wasn’t a chance Santa could miss us. I dare say that if I opened the blinds while the lights were on, the moon would be lit by our house alone. But elf Sergio has his own logic … he informed me that the star was an incredibly important part of the Christmas tradition because without the North Star, the Wise Men would never have found baby Jesus, and if they didn’t find Jesus, then we wouldn’t be able to celebrate Christmas because they wouldn’t have been able to give Mary and Joseph the gifts to help them get away from King Herod.

I offered to lift him up so he could place it on top of the tree, but he refused saying he had to make the journey himself. Without help … not even a ladder. By this time Luna was quite agitated. She didn’t want Sergio to get hurt by climbing so high (the tree is only six feet tall). As always, Sergion made Luna his first concern. He brought her a chair to sit in so she could watch him every moment. And he promised to climb slowly.

Do you know what it means when a SLOTH promises to move slow???

I figure we might have the star on the tree by Christmas. He moves an inch, stops and tells Luna all about the lights on the tree, then moves another inch. Repeat.

By the way, I’m looking for the folks who did the Star War themed light show as their outdoor Christmas decorations. While it is incredible and amazing, they have NO IDEA the impact on a young, impressionable, Santa-obsessed sloth-elf. If you haven’t seen it, the video is below, and once viewed, you’ll understand what I mean.
