Four years ago today, while going through chemotherapy for Leukemia and Lymphoma, I was having a pretty rough day, so I blogged about it on my cancer site. The post was titled, Life Beyond Normal, because at that point, my normal had been stripped away, turned completely upside down, shaken, and forever changed. I had to learn what my limits are all over again, and those who have known me for several years know that I struggle against limitations in the best of times. Oddly enough, when Facebook showed me the post as a “memory” there was a synchronicity to it. Last night, I suffered through one of the worst nights I’ve had in quite some time. I am used to not being able to sleep easily or well, but on top of not sleeping, I felt absolutely dreadful. But this morning, when I woke after a scant (maybe) 2 hours sleep, to read through a time in my life that was WORSE in every way, was a blessing in disguise.

I immediately stopped focusing on how poor I felt, and instead focused on how much better I feel compared to 4 years ago. Four years ago I was still facing the fact that while I had a relatively benign form of leukemia and lymphoma, my particular case had just the month before been diagnosed as exceptionally aggressive due to some abnormalities and life no longer lay in front of me like a big ol’ highway. All of a sudden I was on a twisting, turning road where I could only see as far as the next bend.

I am a “Spoonie” now. Even though my cancer is realtively under control with a new treatment protocol, I have been isolated for the past year and a half because the leukemia has attacked my immune system and I now struggle to fight off illness. So last night when the universe stripped away all my remaining spoons, I got a little down. It’s the holiday season, and I do love the holidays. Reading the post from 4 years ago, however, changed my perspective immediately. While yesterday and today it has hurt to move, it is nowhere near as painful as moving was then. Four years ago, I would not have been able to concentrate enough to string a sentence on the page, let alone write a chapter. I felt as if my creativity had been stripped away. Today, I am working on my next Middle Grade project and my excitement is growing. I have recently launched 7th Grade Revolution which has been very positive so far. And my creativity is staying with me. I have a top Middle Grade editor, a former Editorial Director of 20 years for one of the Big Five, excited to work with me on this project, and an agent who is kicking my tail to get enough of the book written we can appropriately forecast when it will be ready for editing. And I am going to do it. The details are flooding in, so I may be in a position where it is difficult to keep up, versus having to pull every scene through like a recalcitrant tooth.

Why am I talking about this on my author blog instead of my cancer blog? Because 4 years later, my dreams are as big as ever, and I’m closer to achieving them now than I ever have been in the past. I realized that The Secret of the Red Key is a huge stepping stone along the path to success.

But the biggest reason is that I want to make sure all kids know never to give up on their dreams. No matter the obstacle, as long as you have a passion for something, follow your passion. Yes, I am still living life beyond normal, where daily naps are essential, and sometimes the bad days frankly suck. But those bad days are temporary, and they aren’t as frequent, and I’m stronger than I was before, and I have already achieved so much, how can I stop now when the dream is firmly in reach?

I had planned to be taking a hiatus from blogging after doing 24 days of Sloth on the Shelf with Sergio, but sometimes something unexpected happens to change those plans … as did in this case. Since I am pretty much confined to home because of illness, during the month of December, I had several things delivered. Gifts from friends, gifts for family, groceries, essentials, etc. The gifts from others were sometimes opened (when they asked me to), but others were waiting for Christmas day. Imagine my surprise when I opened a gift to find a card that said they were a secret friend who wanted me to feel loved and all would be revealed soon. Then another gift arrived with another message saying much the same thing.

I love surprises. And I love anticipation of surprises, so this had me smiling big time, wondering who had such a wonderful idea. After tantalizing me with a few gifts, I received a card with the sweetest letter and the picture of Flash (drawn by a friend because the secret friend knew I loved sloths because of Sergio the sloth) from a ten-year-old girl. What she had to say in her letter brought tears to my eyes because it was so incredibly thoughtful.

My secret friend, I’ll call her RAD for her initials, had attended a bible study where the leader asked for them to think of someone to give gifts to for Christmas to make them feel special, and since RAD had heard I was ill and had been praying for me, she put my name in. When a little girl was chosen to be the group giftee, RAD decided she was going to do this for me on her own. My heart was, and still is, incredibly touched that a girl who I have not yet met, who I have never even spoken with, would want to show an adult she didn’t know so much love. RAD went to family and friends and raised money to buy the gifts and each gift was for a particular reason. So much thought and care went into everything she did.

What a fantastic reminder of what the spirit of Christmas is truly about. What a lovely and tender heart RAD has, and the will to follow a project through. I am truly blessed by her. It made me start thinking about how the world would change if we each took RAD’s spirit to heart and helped someone in need. She didn’t just give things. She gave a part of herself. I may have been alone this Christmas because I had to be, but I certainly wasn’t lonely, and Christmas was magical.

I recently went to the doctor because I knew there was something not functioning correctly. Sure enough, I had a flare up of diverticulitis. So armed with antibiotics and the doctor’s instructions to stay on clear liquids for the week, I returned home to battle it off. With the number of times I’ve had to do clear liquids, you’d think it’d get easier. It doesn’t. Then I returned after a week for the re-check and to review the blood results … and had a bit of a surprise waiting for me. The pre-diagnosis (which has now been confirmed) is Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). Not exactly what I was expecting to hear.

But while leukemia is an incredibly scary word, there is a bright side. CLL is the most benign form of leukemia around, from what I have learned so far. Normal life expectancy, minimal impact to quality of life, no treatment or chemo in early stages. So while no one likes hearing that they have cancer, what I heard could have been far worse.

I’m not a stranger to cancer… not for myself, but I grew up with it around me, and have known many wonderful people who have fallen to the horrendous beast. My early teen years were overshadowed by the possibility that cancer might take my father. He survived… for a while. Cancer did take him in the end. But through his example, and the people I was exposed to during those years, I learned many things. Doctors, while continually striving to increase their knowledge, don’t know everything. Before my parents were married, my father was given a prognosis of 5-6 years. They decided to marry anyway to enjoy the time they had together… which turned out to be 33 years. And yes, I’ve known cases that have gone the other way.

One of the biggest things I learned from my dad was that you can live in fear of dying, or you can pack as much living as you can into the time you have — because no one really knows how long that is going to be. My parents loved to travel, and Dad was the KING of the great travel deal. He’d find something advertised and the next thing I knew, they were off to Singapore, Paris, or Greece. And from both parents I learned, You can’t change what is, all you can do is accept and move forward.

So… that is what I’m doing. When the doctor gave me the diagnosis, I wasn’t terribly surprised. First off because he had laid down the blood work between us to go over it and the top number was the White Blood Cell count and one look was all I needed to know something was wrong. And secondly, because of my family history, I have been mentally prepared to hear a cancer diagnosis for years. The likelihood I would escape it was too slim, and mentally I’m always prepared for the worst, while hoping for the best. It has stood me in good stead so far. And while not pleased to have leukemia, I am very pleased with the prognosis, and the lightness of this particular variety. I wasn’t aware such a non-life threatening variety of leukemia existed.

Why am I writing this post? Because I don’t plan on keeping it a secret. When we keep secrets, it makes the thing we’re keeping quiet seem more threatening than it actually is, and the secrecy imbues it with power. I don’t want anything to have a hold over me… and I certainly don’t want to give any power to this disease. It will try to rob me of power anyway, and I plan to fight it at every turn because that is my nature. And I’m talking about it because Leukemia is a scary word, and maybe through talking about it we can make it less scary. In telling people about the diagnosis, I have heard “you’re so brave” or “You don’t have to put up such a courageous front.“

Here’s the thing… I’m not being brave. And I don’t feel courageous, or like I’m putting up a front. I have been diagnosed with a slow progression cancer, and I’m okay with it. Really. I accept the diagnosis … now let’s see what we can do about kicking its tail. And I’ll be talking about it, and posting about it… because through the discussion, it loses a little of its foreboding. And I have nicknamed it Leukemia Lite (which of course then became LK Lite) because now, this is a part (small part) of me.

How am I right now? Tired. And I bruise easily and have been having some muscle spasms. So I curtail my nights a little and actually listen to my body when it says you’re done, take naps when I need them, try to be a bit more cautious because of the bruising, and manage the muscle spasms with quinine. And I am going to ramp up the exercise, because that is one of the best ways to combat the tiredness. Or so I have been told. All I know is that I have too much living to do to give in now… and I have way too many books to write.
