Fellow cub and agency mate, Jake A. Strife challenged me to post some lines from my current WIP (Work In Progress). It has taken me a few days to get to the challenge because last week I was on vacation, and had a writer get together to attend once home, followed by marching orders to switch gears from my agent, Italia Gandolfo.

Jake, in addition to writing Sci-Fi, horror, and dabbling in fantasy, is a gamer and a character artist, so hop on over to his blog and check out his work. To check out his writing, go over to Wattpad and read the stories he posts there. Here are the challenge rules:

Provide the link back to the post by the person who nominated you.

Write a little about your work-in-progress.

Give the first sentences of the first three chapters of your current WIP.

Nominate four other writers for the challenge.

So let’s get down to it… a few days ago this post would have been about another WIP, but as I said, marching orders changed and I had another revision round to do on Timmy and the Golden Lion Tamarin. This is the first book in The Guardian Angel Animal Series aimed at children 5-8 years in age and will be published by True North Publishing in Spring of 2015. The major theme for the first book in the series is bullying and how Timmy, with the help of his Golden Lion Tamarin, deals with it. Book 2 in the series will shortly be in progress.

Now for the lines:

Chapter One — Afraid and Alone

By the time the alarm clock went off, eight-year-old Timmy Hawkins had dressed and gathered his books together. Not because he looked forward to his new school … but because he hated it. After a near-sleepless night, Monday morning arrived, as it always did.

Chapter Two — The Welcoming Committee

Zeke always rushed to be the first kid off the bus, meeting friends who waited for him. Together they formed a “welcoming committee” to greet their victims as the rest of the kids got off the bus. Zeke and his friends called themselves “The Mighty Minions,” and they made life miserable for nearly every kid in school.

Chapter Three — The Creature in the Backyard

Another week blurred by with each school day beginning and ending the same way—being bullied by Zeke. And every day his mom asked Timmy whether he made any friends and he had to face her disappointment when he answered no. Not one single kid in school could be friends with him or even say a kind word.

My nominations are as follows and I’m including their Facebook pages, so give them a Like:

One friend for each stop (and they can enter too and bring all of their friends to the party).

But enough of that… let’s get down to what this post is about — Tattered!

What do Sunday afternoon court proceedings, cheerleader tryouts, and a book burning have in common? Katie McCabe is back in action.

After her nemesis Harvey is found guilty and sentenced to community service, Katie wants to believe her troubles are over, but Harvey won’t rest until he gets revenge. When blackmail rears its ugly head, she’s caught between friends and enemies putting her growing relationship with Tom at stake. Books go up in flames and Katie’s world rains down in tatters.

Each of the stops along the way will introduce you to the characters you will find in Tattered and Katie is very excited because she will get to do most of the commentary about the people you will meet within the pages. Speaking of which, since today’s puzzle is a picture of Katie, I’d better say a little something about her. Katie is at bottom, a good girl, but she tends to get in a lot of trouble… sometimes through no fault of her own, but usually, she has a hand in it. She is impulsive, has a good sense of humor, is loyal to her friends, and has a good heart. Her main goal? To figure out this thing called life. But you’ll get to know a lot more about her during the tour. Now for the stops:

**Note** All winners must have a US or Canada mailing address — but comments from all countries are welcome.

I don’t make a secret of the fact that 2010 was a difficult year for me, both on the personal level and a writing level. But with every difficulty something good came as well. And at the end of the old year and beginning of the new, it is natural to reflect on the year before to help set the course for the new year. This year, because of all of the negative in the last, my focus has been on the good that came to me.

For me the BEST of 2010 was the people I had the opportunity to meet in person. So these posts (I had to break them up, or they’d go on forever) will focus on the people I knew online, but had the opportunity to meet in person. Meetings which further cemented the friendships already formed.

I’m going to start with the most recently met and go from there. Last night, the wonderful Kimberly Kinrade and her man, Dmytry Karpov had a New Year’s Eve party for local Twitter friends. An intimate gathering of people, most of whom were meeting in person for the first time. And as I have found in the past, when the people who know each other from Twitter get together, there are no awkward silences, no wondering who this person is and what to say to them, you just jump right in and pick up the conversation.

At this gathering, I got to meet a few new people who I have now added to my followers list. Starting with Sean Vessey (@SeanOTD) who flew out from Virginia for the party. Well… all right… he flew out to visit relatives, and since he was here was able to attend the party, but I like the first version better. Sean is a quiet, teddy-bear kinda guy, who watches and enjoys (and as writers don’t we all do that from time to time?) A real sweetheart.

Another first time connection for me was Charles and the talented Lisette Brodey (@LisetteBrodey) who has a couple of books out on Amazon.com, Crooked Moon (general fiction) and Squalor, New Mexico (young adult fiction) which I will add to my reading list. We talked a little about books and more about Twitter and followers, and as always it is a pleasure meeting like-minded people.

Ranee Dillon (@RaneeDillon), whom I previously met online, is a hoot and a half. She chirpy-chats just like her twitter tweets and she has a delightful laugh. When I think of Ranee, I think of poetry, because she is one in my stream who tweets and retweets poetry, which when you catch as it flits pass is always a day brightener. She is tingly heart-goodness personified.

And of course, there were the hosts Kimberly Kinrade (@KimberlyKinrade) and Dmytry Karpov (@DmytryKarpov). I met Dmytry online first as he wandered through the Twitterverse getting to know folks. Then he disappeared from my view for a bit and came back full of love for the beautiful Kimberly Kinrade. It was at his suggestion that I started following Kimberly. Their story has been epically tweeted and they have a love blog about their story if you’d like to find out more. Suffice it to say, that although the original plan was for the two of them to be together for a couple weeks prior to the party, Dmytry didn’t actually arrive until yesterday. The two were very happy to be together after their enforced separation.

2010 was a year of meeting some incredible people. With some the relationship is still new and forming, like those mentioned above, others have become entrenched in my heart. For me, spending 2010 with people I had not met in person before, but knew online was a fitting way to see the year out, because my brightest moments of 2010 were primarily made up of meeting people in real life whom I had made my friends. And while there were others at the party, I have plans to talk about them later in this series.
