Bats, as creatures of the night, have long been steeped in myth and folklore across cultures, often symbolizing transformation, intuition, and the liminal space between worlds. Their unique ability to navigate in darkness and their association with caves—often seen as gateways to the underworld—have made them powerful symbols in both ancient and modern storytelling.

Of late, I've been posting a lot concerning my personal journey, so thought it was time to switch things up a bit and move on to something more fun. Why did I pick bats? Well, Bat Appreciation Day is April 17th and I've been researching bats for a book I hope to start writing soon—the second book in the Homeless Myths Series, Quest for the Eternal Flame. Let's get into bats!!!

Myths, Folklore, and Symbolism About Bats

Bats hold a fascinating array of meanings across cultures, often reflecting the duality of their nature as creatures of the night. Here's how bats are perceived around the world:

Negative Symbolism

Europe: In Western traditions, bats are often linked to fear and the supernatural. They are associated with witches, vampires, and the underworld, largely due to their nocturnal habits and their depiction in Gothic literature like Dracula.

Mesoamerican Mythology: The Mayans revered Camazotz, a bat god associated with the underworld, death, and sacrifice. While powerful, this deity also carried a sense of foreboding and danger.

Christian Symbolism: Bats have been depicted as unclean or connected to malevolent spirits.

Positive Symbolism

China: In Chinese culture, bats are symbols of good fortune and happiness. The word for “bat” (蝠, fú) is a homophone for “blessing” (福, fú), making bats a popular motif in art and design. Five bats together often represent the “Five Blessings”—longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a peaceful death.

Native American Traditions: Many Native American tribes view bats as symbols of intuition, rebirth, and transformation. Their ability to navigate in darkness is seen as a metaphor for personal growth and the journey through life's challenges.

India: In some regions, bats are associated with wealth and prosperity. They also appear in Tamil Sangam poetry as allegories for love and familial bonds.

Bat Symbolism in the United States

In the United States, bat mythology and symbolism often draw from a blend of Native American traditions and European influences, creating a unique cultural perspective. Here's how bats are viewed in the U.S. and how they differ or align with European traditions:

Native American Influence

In Native American cultures, bats are often seen as symbols of intuition, rebirth, and transformation. Tribes like the Cherokee and Apache associate bats with adaptability and the ability to navigate through life's challenges. Their nocturnal nature and reliance on echolocation are interpreted as metaphors for seeing beyond the surface and trusting inner guidance. This perspective is distinct from the more fear-based associations found in European folklore. For example:

Cherokee Mythology: Bats are seen as mediators between the physical and spiritual worlds, embodying the ability to traverse both realms.

Apache Stories: Bats are viewed as clever and resourceful creatures, often playing roles in tales that emphasize their intelligence and versatility.

European Influence

European settlers brought with them the darker associations of bats, linking them to witches, vampires, and the supernatural. These ideas were reinforced by Gothic literature and later by Hollywood's portrayal of bats in horror films. In this context, bats symbolize fear, mystery, and the unknown.

Modern U.S. Symbolism

In contemporary American culture, bats have taken on a dual role:

Ecological Importance: With growing awareness of their role as pollinators and pest controllers, bats are increasingly seen as vital to the ecosystem. This positive view contrasts with their historical portrayal as harbingers of doom.

Pop Culture Icons: Characters like Batman have redefined bats as symbols of resilience, justice, and the ability to thrive in darkness. This modern interpretation blends the fearsome and the heroic, creating a uniquely American take on bat symbolism.

Distinctive U.S. Perspective

What sets the U.S. apart is this fusion of Native American reverence for bats as spiritual guides and European associations with fear and mystery. This blend creates a rich tapestry of meanings, where bats can symbolize everything from transformation and intuition to resilience and ecological balance.

Bats’ symbolism and mythology across cultures paint a picture of a creature that transcends its physical form, embodying transformation, intuition, and the interplay of light and darkness. From their roles as spiritual guides in Native American traditions to their associations with fear and mystery in European folklore, bats serve as powerful symbols of duality and resilience. In the United States, the blending of these cultural perspectives has enriched bats’ significance, framing them as both ecologically vital and spiritually profound. Whether seen as harbingers of the unknown or messengers of blessings, bats continue to inspire a sense of wonder, reflecting the beauty and complexity of the world—and ourselves—when we dare to explore beyond the surface.

Duality and Transformation of Bats and Their Legacy

Bats’ ability to thrive in darkness and their association with caves—often seen as gateways to other realms—make them symbols of transformation and liminality. They are creatures that exist between worlds, embodying the balance of light and dark, life and death.

Who knew??? I gained a better knowledge and appreciation of bats when working on 7th Grade Revolution … after all there had to be bats in the tunnel.

Bats over the years have gained an undeserved unsavory reputation. The first thing most people think of are blood-sucking vampire bats, but there are over 1,400 species of bats and only 3 of those are vampire bats—who tend to bother livestock more than people. What else are people afraid of with bats?

All bats have rabies and if they bite you, you'll get rabies, too. WRONG
Approximately 5-6% of the bats captured for testing have rabies, so while possible, a far cry from ALL.

Bats are bad luck. WRONG
Bats actually do several things that are helpful. Such as eating disease-spreading insect like mosquitoes, roaches, etc. Forget the citronella candles … put a bat on the patio and it can consume up to one thousand mosquitoes an hour. Plus they do such amazing work like spreading seeds for future bananas, avocados, and about 300 other plants.

Bats will try to nest in your hair. WRONG
Though as a child I thought this might be a possibility, and it has happened to some people, it is more a matter of accident than design. Bats don't nest. They roost upside down because they have difficulty in taking off from the ground. But by hanging upside down, the can drop and use the momentum from the fall to start their flight. It might give the appearance they are swooping toward you, but the reality is they are simply taking flight.

I have another reason for celebrating Bat Appreciation Day. Meet Melvin.

Isn't he adorable??? When I shared that it was Bat Appreciation Day with a friend who loves bats, the name Melvin hit me, so I created an image of an albino bat named Melvin. He will be in the Homeless Myths series, my current work in progress, and I already know where he lives, how he's going to interact with the kids, and he's just too cute not to share. I'm certain Melvin is going to have mega personality to match his endearing appearance, so keep your eyes peeled for more about Melvin as the series continues.

Four years ago today, while going through chemotherapy for Leukemia and Lymphoma, I was having a pretty rough day, so I blogged about it on my cancer site. The post was titled, Life Beyond Normal, because at that point, my normal had been stripped away, turned completely upside down, shaken, and forever changed. I had to learn what my limits are all over again, and those who have known me for several years know that I struggle against limitations in the best of times. Oddly enough, when Facebook showed me the post as a “memory” there was a synchronicity to it. Last night, I suffered through one of the worst nights I’ve had in quite some time. I am used to not being able to sleep easily or well, but on top of not sleeping, I felt absolutely dreadful. But this morning, when I woke after a scant (maybe) 2 hours sleep, to read through a time in my life that was WORSE in every way, was a blessing in disguise.

I immediately stopped focusing on how poor I felt, and instead focused on how much better I feel compared to 4 years ago. Four years ago I was still facing the fact that while I had a relatively benign form of leukemia and lymphoma, my particular case had just the month before been diagnosed as exceptionally aggressive due to some abnormalities and life no longer lay in front of me like a big ol’ highway. All of a sudden I was on a twisting, turning road where I could only see as far as the next bend.

I am a “Spoonie” now. Even though my cancer is realtively under control with a new treatment protocol, I have been isolated for the past year and a half because the leukemia has attacked my immune system and I now struggle to fight off illness. So last night when the universe stripped away all my remaining spoons, I got a little down. It’s the holiday season, and I do love the holidays. Reading the post from 4 years ago, however, changed my perspective immediately. While yesterday and today it has hurt to move, it is nowhere near as painful as moving was then. Four years ago, I would not have been able to concentrate enough to string a sentence on the page, let alone write a chapter. I felt as if my creativity had been stripped away. Today, I am working on my next Middle Grade project and my excitement is growing. I have recently launched 7th Grade Revolution which has been very positive so far. And my creativity is staying with me. I have a top Middle Grade editor, a former Editorial Director of 20 years for one of the Big Five, excited to work with me on this project, and an agent who is kicking my tail to get enough of the book written we can appropriately forecast when it will be ready for editing. And I am going to do it. The details are flooding in, so I may be in a position where it is difficult to keep up, versus having to pull every scene through like a recalcitrant tooth.

Why am I talking about this on my author blog instead of my cancer blog? Because 4 years later, my dreams are as big as ever, and I’m closer to achieving them now than I ever have been in the past. I realized that The Secret of the Red Key is a huge stepping stone along the path to success.

But the biggest reason is that I want to make sure all kids know never to give up on their dreams. No matter the obstacle, as long as you have a passion for something, follow your passion. Yes, I am still living life beyond normal, where daily naps are essential, and sometimes the bad days frankly suck. But those bad days are temporary, and they aren’t as frequent, and I’m stronger than I was before, and I have already achieved so much, how can I stop now when the dream is firmly in reach?

As I am working on the first book in my Homeless Myths series, The Star Warriors and the Secret of the Red Key, the topic of belief systems is present all the time. With Myths in the series name, those things are running through my head. Why do we believe the things we do. What do these kids believe? How passionately do they believe it? Are their beliefs any less credible simply because they are children? Or is it adults who have twisted those belief systems based on what can or cannot be “proven”?

When I read, I fully invest in the story. I enter the world of the characters and live the story with them. I did the same as a child whether reading it or listening to my mother read bedtime stories. I remember reaching the moment in Peter Pan when Tinkerbell has drunk the poison meant for Peter and was dying. I cried, not so much because I liked Tinkerbell because I didn’t, but because she was Peter’s friend and he would miss her, and even though she was mean to Wendy, I didn’t want her to die. So when Peter asked everyone who believed in fairies to clap their hands, I clapped as loud and hard as I could, because I knew if Tinkerbell heard she would be saved.

Fast forward a year or two. I would listen to Peter Pan on an album we had and would always clap at the important moment. Not quite so loud and hard as I did in the beginning, but I clapped because I believed. But then things subtly changed. I’d listen to the record or read the story and would think, “But not everyone is reading or listening to the story at the same time as me, so how do I know whether Tinkerbell is dying?” Would my lone claps save her? I clapped. Not because I believed it would save her, but because I didn’t know it wouldn’t. Notice, it wasn’t my belief in fairies that had waned, but my belief that clapping could save a fairy in a far distant land.

Before, I had believed without question. Now, logic played a part and altered my beliefs based on concepts I better understood, like not everyone reading the same story at the same time. And slowly, I stopped clapping … and felt sad because it was no longer in my power to help Tinkerbell live or die. I first believed I had the ability to sway Tinkerbell’s fate because Peter, the hero of the story, had told me so. Later I believed because I had proven it to be true … I had clapped and she lived. Later still, my belief slipped because I had greater knowledge and that knowledge cast doubts on the beliefs I had previously held.

I find the same to be true with all beliefs. We might first believe something because we hear it from an authority figure. Someone we like/revere/trust. As we grow/mature in our knowledge surrounding the belief, there might be some subtle shifts in what we believe and how strongly we believe it. Sometimes we reach a point where we discard a belief previously held. And sometimes the hole, where we once held the belief, is filled with sorrow or even anger.

Back to the kids in the Homeless Myths series. They believe many things adults would say were wrong. But they hold on to their beliefs because they need them. The beliefs help explain the world they live in. A world so chaotic it otherwise does not make sense. And who is to say they are wrong? Because we cannot prove them right doesn’t mean they are wrong.

Yes, I have given up the belief that clapping because I believe in fairies can save one from dying, but who is to say I don’t believe it fairies?

I have been a chocolate lover my entire life. Unfortunately, I was tortured as a child because I was not allowed to have chocolate because I was allergic to it. Turns out I never was allergic to chocolate itself, but chocolate when paired with other things. Good thing I’m a purist and love plain chocolate the best. By the time I was a teen, I was allowed to have chocolate … and good thing, too as I may not have made it through puberty without it. In the Milk vs. Dark debate, I land solidly on the side of dark chocolate. Nice to like something that is good for me (in moderation).

Outside of the health benefits and the satisfaction having a piece of chocolate brings, one chocolate company is having a beneficial impact on endangered species. Madécasse, a Brooklyn based company, works directly with the farmers in Madagascar — home of the mouse lemur. The mouse lemur population has been decreasing in Madagascar due to deforestation. Madécasse is helping farmers by planting more cacao trees. The farmers don’t mind the critters in the trees because they help distribute the seeds and keep the insect population down.

The second book in the Guardian Angel Animal Series, A CinderElla Tail, features a baby mouse lemur named Ella. In the story, Ella must help Allison resolve her family issues because Allison’s dad has remarried and she now has to put up with the terrible twins whose mission is to make Allison’s life miserable. The story will have plenty of Timmy and his lovable Golden Lion Tamarin, Rin, because Timmy and Rin want to help as many people as they can.

Who could resist a chance to help a cute little animal like the mouse lemur? Especially when you can do it by eating chocolate.

When I saw the oncologist last week we didn’t have the results from the CT Scan. I saw my regular physician this week and he had the results. And I’ll be candid … they aren’t good. The scan revealed what I already knew — that the nodule on my neck was not the only lymphoma mass that would be found. In fact, by the time I went to the doctor this week, a few more had made their presence known. I have a smattering in the neck area, one in the chest, and several in the abdomen. My doctor, who is a cautious physician, wants me to discuss prognosis with the oncologist. And being me, I asked what value it would have to know a number that is going to be inaccurate anyway?

My first acts to accomplish in 2017 is to get my affairs in order. Not because I believe I’m dying or that I won’t recover, but because it needs to be done and has been on my mind for some time and it is time to stop procrastinating. EVERYONE should have their affairs in order. You never know when that bus is going to run you over. Plain and simple. No one is guaranteed any specific time on this Earth. And now that I’ve said that, I have NO intention of going anywhere anytime soon. I have too much to accomplish with my life and I intend to do it.

My doctor was a little down with my results. My lab results are bad. My scan results are bad. But I was ready to dance a jig because the scan results had one result that made me very, very happy. I have been having near constant pain under my left rib cage for a few weeks, and eating certain foods made it extremely painful, which I have been finding out by trial and error. When with the oncologist, we discussed and we both felt it might be an enlargement of the spleen. Which is something you DON’T want. The scan results showed that my spleen was perfectly normal and the area where the pain is coming from is where there are some lymphoma lumps taking up space. We’re getting ready to blast those with chemo, so they will be going bye-bye, and I’ll just have small, soft meals in the meantime. But there was one little problem. I didn’t have the chemo meds yet and didn’t know when they would arrive. My doc got the oncologists office on the line and asked them to find out what was going on as he wanted me on the chemo immediately. There had been a slight mix-up and the meds had not been ordered, but they got it straightened out same day, and I received the shipment yesterday.

The chemo comes from a specialty pharmacy and so far I am incredibly impressed. They provide a mechanism to help you remember whether you have taken your medication or not as well as timer to put on the bottle cap that will alert you that it is time to take your next dose. And for me, this is fabulous. I don’t do pill dispensers well (it is such a hassle to fill them for me), so the little thing to flip it to show that you’ve taken it IS something I can do. Especially as it sticks directly on the bottle itself. And the timer??? Brilliant. Especially when I lose track of time so easily. Then after they arrived, the pharmacist called and went over how I am to take the medication, what to do, what not to do, and to let me know that they had trained staff available via phone 24/7 if I had any questions or couldn’t reach my doctor.

I will shortly be taking my second dose. So far, so good. A brief period of wooziness, but other than that feeling the same. The biggest thing for me to figure out was when to schedule the dose because I have to take on an empty stomach, so nothing 2 hours prior and 1 hour after (except water), and it has to be taken at the same time every day (hence the handy dandy timer). When I saw that it may cause dizziness, I decided to wait until after I had seen the knee doctor yesterday (yes, I managed to get some fluid on my knee that was giving me some trouble), so I felt after dinner would be good. That way, if I’m not feeling well, I can simply go to bed.

The picture at the top of the post fits the mood right now so perfectly. Yes, there is darkness, but the light is shining through. I am filled with hope and am so encouraged to be taking action to beat this cancer back down into submission. I am blessed in my friends and the number of people who care about me, I will never be able to say Thank You enough.

Recently, I was discussing the arc for the Middle Grade (MG) series I am currently researching with an author friend who asked, “Are you sure this isn’t YA (Young Adult)?” My response was an immediate and unequivocal, “Yes.” The question was valid as what we had been discussing could potentially be morphing into the YA realm. But I am firm in my gut feeling that the series is MG and not YA. But why is that?

I could make an argument based on the ages of my characters. There is a core group of kids, the oldest of whom is twelve. Firmly in the realm of Middle Grade. Except that isn’t the only thing that drives the difference in the age categories. My friend’s argument was that the situations felt more YA than MG. And she does have a point. However, one of the best-selling MG series of all time is Harry Potter and the situations in that series are life and death. Plus, my personal opinion of the series is that while it starts as MG, it ends as YA. Is that solely based on Harry’s age and the fact that he is a year older in each book?

Not entirely. For me, the series morphs into YA with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Now does it do that because Harry is fourteen in that book? Which would support the age-based category theory. I say no. The book starts for me as MG and ends as YA and the defining moment for the change is the loss of innocence … the loss of trust … the loss of belief. Harry returns to Hogwarts happy because he feels like he is home again, he has a family — in his godfather Sirius Black, who remains on the run from the dementors — he has his friends, and he and all the other students are under the protection of the castle, the teachers, and Albus Dumbledore. Voldemort cannot win against such things.

Except immediately, he is once again thrown into a situation not of his own making, only this time, he loses a friend (if only temporarily) in the process. The upset between Ron and Harry is strictly MG material. But later in the book, through the machinations of someone he thought he could trust, Harry is taken out of Hogwarts, beyond the protection of Albus Dumbledore, and must fight Voldemort completely on his own. In a mockery of his earlier noble act which gained him points, Harry’s noble act of sharing the win with Cedric cost Cedric his life. It his through his blood that Voldemort fully returns. In the graveyard, Harry loses his innocence having been responsible for taking another to his death, he loses his belief that good can triumph over evil, and he loses trust in the authority figures he expected to be able to protect him.

This is where for me the difference between MG and YA lies. Harry stops seeing everything in terms of black and white or good versus evil where good will prevail, but sees things from a more jaded perspective through shades of gray. He stops seeing things through the innocent eyes of a child. My challenge is to portray my kids, who frankly have seen the seamier side of life, to still see the world they live in through innocent eyes.

It’s a good thing I’m always up for a challenge.

Apparently, unbeknownst to me, my site was busy spamming the internet because it had been connected into a network of sites all directing links to various other sites, ultimately trying to either infect the poor soul on the royal goose chase with some sort of virus, or adding tracking cookies, or trying to sell merchandise to a person who doesn’t want it or need it and wouldn’t buy it from the spammy site if they were paid to. My rockin’ web host provider caught the problem, shut it down, and had removed and restored the site onto a new, clean install of WordPress before I even knew about the breach. All I have to say to the hackers is, 01100010 01100001 01110011 01110100 01100001 01110010 01100100 01110011!!!

I was already in the process of reorganizing my site as I will be writing under two different names — one for children and Middle Grade (LK Griffie), and the other for Young Adult (Liana Gardner) and through discussion with my agent, Italia Gandolfo, we felt it best to have the children’s and the YA segregated as they are very different types of books. I had also already contracted with a web designer to redesign my primary site, but first I had some clean up to do. Unfortunately, the spammy links got indexed and I’ve been working on cleaning up those indexes so they are not still accessible doing damage. At the same time, since I wasn’t sure whether the hackers got in through the theme or one of the many plugins I used on the site, I stripped everything out and left a one page site running two plugins … Security and the WordPress jetpack with most everything turned off.

One page with a graphic stating the site is under construction and I figured hackers would find it uninteresting (there really isn’t anything to mess up, there is no data left hanging out, not that it would be of interest to a hacker anyway). Yesterday I was proven wrong. I had hack attempts trying to login with the user ID admin from IP addresses all over the world every few seconds for over a 24-hour period. It was astounding to watch the live traffic as it hit, attempt after attempt all trying to access the site login. I got tired of blocking individual IP addresses and finally wound up blocking entire countries … I had to do something while the siege was going on. I couldn’t keep up.

I will ultimately relax the security on my site again, once the hackers decide that they aren’t going to get what they want with my site and they move on to the next one. But the experience underscored a few things for me:

Creating an administrative user ID that is not admin or administrator for your website is essential.

And once you have, removing the admin/administrator user is just as essential.

As fussy and fiddly as they are, having the protection of a strong password can save your site from being completely hijacked. Something like: 9]t.F`fY}TT~NuNA Or like: :=9%2.LvqXA@~QZ* will keep hackers guessing … because it isn’t your dog’s name, or your mom’s, or best friend, or … you get the idea. Things that people can guess from knowing you.

So until the new site is completed … which should be any day now …

PS — for those who’d like to know … the binary code in the picture says, “get lost hackers”

Last year this time, I was recovering from one knee surgery and getting ready for a second, but health wise, I was doing better and better. Then I lost a bit of steam as we slid into fall and have taken a few stabs at getting back on top of where I need to be with my eating habits, exercise, and the hardest of all … getting enough rest. I have failed miserably.

Failure is not an option, though. I have too much to get done, never enough time (hence the whole lack of rest thing), but I have to make the time to put my health first. So, I decided that I would try a food delivery service with an organic paleo menu to help keep me on track food-wise. I have to make changes and having someone else do the decision making on food works for me. Enter Sun Basket.

I had already placed the order and it was delivered before I got the news that makes putting my health first even more of a priority. It makes me extremely glad I had already made the decision to go with the service to provide organic food. Now it is necessary. So the box arrived on my porch, and when I opened it, the first thing I see is the recipe cards for the meals inside.

Each meal came in its own bag, so even I cannot get the ingredients muddled because everything is so well labeled. All the ingredients are fresh — they looked wonderful. For my very first meal under the new regime … the one I NEED to stay on to get myself balanced out again … I tried the Ginger-turkey meatballs in coconut-milk broth which was placed on a bed of cauliflower rice. I actually MADE cauliflower rice (not hard, but seriously I barely knew of its existence, so the thought of making it had never crossed my mind.)

Life can get so hectic, trying to keep up with everything usually means something gets overlooked for a while. I have renewed my quest for health … what quest do you want to renew?

It has been awhile since I updated this blog … and for good reason — there hasn’t been anything to say. Two years ago, April 10th, I had my last chemo treatment. File that under “WOW, Time flies!!” Today, I had my quarterly blood-letting to check to see how things are going. In some respects, those two years have passed like I only blinked my eyes, but in others, I realize how much I have accomplished and how my life has changed … for the better. Throughout it all, my doctor has been thrilled with my blood values, as they have been smack dab in the middle of the normal range. That changed today.

Today my visit brought a bit of news. My lymphocyte count is no longer in the normal range; it has crossed the line into the “high” territory. At this juncture, the doctor is adopting a wait and see attitude because I have recently been sick, and that could be the cause of the elevated lymphocyte count. We discussed testing, but since the tests she would run at this time were negative when my system was 50% compromised, we decided against doing any tests. And I swear, any more radiation tests and I’ll start glowing like a Christmas bulb.

What does wait and see mean? I put renewed focus on my health — eating the right foods, exercising more, and making sure I get enough rest — and in July we look at my blood values again. From there … who knows? I am not going to speculate. In fact, I’m going to keep on moving forward with my life, focused on the wonderful things I’m involved with, and figure this is a blip on the radar caused by the recent bout of bronchitis.

I liked this picture of clouds because even though they’re dark and night is falling, they are still lit by the sun and their radiance is beautiful.

Not something I have an opportunity to do very often because I’m juggling so many different things, but it had been a rough week and I needed to decompress a bit. I chose Little Boy, which is set in World War II times, and is primarily about a father, sent to war, and his son’s belief that by doing specific things as given to him in a list by his priest, and believing enough, he will be able to bring his father home. While this is a Christian-themed film, what the overriding theme boils down to is faith. After a sermon where the verse talked about having the faith of a mustard seed (Matthew 17:20 “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”), Pepper asked Father Oliver “How can I get bigger faith?” And Father Oliver pulled out the secret ancient list:

Feed the hungry

Shelter the homeless

Visit those in prison

Clothe the naked

Visit the sick

Bury the dead

And Father Oliver added an item because of Pepper’s actions in hurting a person of Japanese descent…

Befriend Hashimoto

I’m not going to get all spoilery, but the movie got me to thinking about faith and having the faith that can move a mountain … which requires the banishment of all doubt. Having the faith of a mustard seed, or that of a small boy who BELIEVES. How many of us are walking around not doing things because we lack the belief in ourselves to do it? How many of us give up after trying a few times because obviously it was not meant to be?

I am a writer, and the publishing industry is full of NO through all levels. If you’re just starting out and querying, you’re going to hear the word “no”; when you’re on submission to publishers, you’re going to hear the word “no”; when your book is being sent out to garner the coveted starred review, you’re going to hear the word “no”; and ultimately, at some point from the reading public, you’re going to hear the word “no” because not every book is for every person. How many “no”s before your faith is shaken? How many times can you be rejected before you give up? How do you keep your belief intact?

Before Pepper’s father went off to war, the movie did a brilliant job of taking the viewer into the imagination of an eight-year-old boy, where he and his father acted out adventures in the old west, on the high seas, and more, and when the situation became dire, his father would shout, “Do you believe you can do this, partner?”

The question made me smile. While the writing itself is a solitary endeavor for the most part, it takes many, many people to help polish up the work, and those who have someone in their corner egging them on are blessed. We need that someone. And now that my best friend and I are in the midst of starting a business in this industry, the question becomes even more pertinent. Together we have to move that mountain to make sure everything aligns to get the business off the ground. And we’re doing it … one step at a time. Before we took the leap, she asked me the all important question, “Do you believe we can do this?”

I have been well-trained in my response. Despite the odds, despite the obstacles, despite the height of the mountain we have to scale, my answer is always the same …

I believe we can. And I truly do. Giving up is not an option.

What do you believe in?

I am excited about how this book is shaping up and how close I am to the finish line with it. Then I happened to have a conversation with my literary manager and agent extraordinaire, Italia Gandolfo, and she said the dreaded word. DEADLINE! I can’t fault her, she’s been incredibly patient waiting for me to write this particular book, which has written slower than any book I’ve ever done, but has been so worth the time. And deadlines are part of the writing life — whether self-imposed or given to us by others.

And she didn’t JUST say deadline … she gave me the reason. Two well-known producers are interested and she needs a finished product ASAP, and could I please get on it??? I shook my head to clear any obstructions in my ears making me hear things. But Italia confirmed it and may have mentioned that if she gave me my way, I’d pick at this one forever. So then this happened.

After I finished running in circles, my next thought was, Holy Crap, I need to get this thing done!!! I take deadlines very seriously anyway — even if it is a deadline I give myself. The only way to achieve a goal is to have one and as Napoleon Hill said, “A Goal is a Dream with a Deadline.” Without deadlines we cannot take our dreams and turn them into reality. So I do set deadlines for myself all the time, but when it comes to my writing career, I involve Italia, as my manager, to help me set those goals because together we are building my career. And now I have an honest-to-goodness real deadline made out of concrete.

So how do I handle this new deadline??? Using the time-honored tradition of procrastination, I first BLOG about the deadline and break my website in the process. Then I root around in the cupboard because deadlines are serious stuff, so I have to have the appropriate cup to drink from while I am fastened the chain that tethers me to the writing chair. And at this time of year, WHAT could be more appropriate than my turkey cup for a Thanksgiving deadline??? I guess I’d better get busy and get this book submission ready!!
