Every Middle School class has at least one … a kid with a sparkle in their eye and the ability to turn absolutely everything into a joke. They are the pranksters, the rebels, the classroom disruptors. The challenge for every teacher is to keep them at least somewhat toeing the line while not crushing their spirit. Because that spirit is infectious and we all need a reason to laugh from time to time.

Once I hit 7th Grade, I immediately knew who took the title of class clown in my classes — it turned out to be a pair of friends who fed off each other. In hindsight, I do feel a bit sorry for any teacher who had not only this pair, but the rest of us as well because it was a class FULL of rebels. Karma did come to rest on at least one of the clowns when he returned to my high school alma mater as a science teacher.

In 7th Grade Revolution there of course, had to be a class clown, and he stepped up loud and clear early on … Spencer Jackson. Spencer’s character is one of the few that was “modeled” after a person. But really, all I had to go on was one incident. In the article I read which sparked the idea for the book in the first place, there was a mention of a boy who decided to put forth some ideas for the dress code — that girls would be required to wear spaghetti straps. The statement was calculated to wind people up and get the attention of the reporter, and it did. With that one declaration, I had my clown, KNEW I HAD to use the incident in the book, and never looked back. Spencer remained one of the most clear characters to come through and I never had to ask him his thoughts or feelings, he made them abundantly evident.

From 7th Grade Revolution when Spencer continued his antics in the Dungeon but for once, not everyone thought he was funny.

Spencer Jackson popped out from behind some cardboard boxes in the corner. “Boo!”
The girls he yelled at screamed, then laughed. But Dennis was done with Spencer’s pranks. He backed Spencer against the wall. “The next time you get the urge to scare anyone … don’t.”
Spencer put up his hands. “Dude, it was just a harmless joke.”
Dennis frowned. “In case you haven’t noticed, everyone else is helping.” He jabbed a finger in Spencer’s chest. “Except you.”

Of all the characters in 7th Grade Revolution, the one my inner twelve-year-old identified the most with was Rhonda Snodgrass. Smart, funny, individual thinker, reader, and definitely not one of the “IT” crowd. And klutz.

At twelve, I was an athlete — softball and swimming — and I couldn’t figure out how I could excel in things requiring hand/eye coordination and trip over a non-existent shoelace. MUCH later in life, I finally figured out that when doing activities not requiring any concentration, like walking from the kitchen to the family room, my brain feels free to wander so the chair leg my eyes see doesn’t register until after I have tripped over it.

Rhonda is the same when it comes to her klutziness … wrapped up in another world while moving through this one. A recipe for disaster in the making.

The scene from 7th Grade Revolution:

Rhonda picked up her things and hurried to the aisle. She tripped on the chair leg at the end of the row and fell flat. Ouch. It happened so fast she didn’t have a chance to break her fall. She put her hands flat on the floor next to her side and pushed up to a sitting position. Her boobs weren’t big, but falling on them hurt. A sneaker stood about two inches from her hand. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, afraid to see who she’d taken a pratfall in front of.

Dang. She’d flopped at Spencer Jackson’s feet.

“Way to go, Grace.” His arms shot out straight and he moaned. “Oooh. Zombies are coming to get you.” He stepped over her legs with a snicker.

Tonight I started sending emails to middle school language arts teachers to let them know about the Where in the World is Misfit McCabe? project so that they can utilize it in their classes if they would like to. After all, it’s hard to use resources you don’t even know about.

I started with local schools, and by that, I mean schools where I grew up, namely in the Placentia/Yorba Linda area. Hopefully at least one email will spark some interest. What was kind of fun to note was that one of the teachers that I sent a note to taught at the school when I was a student. I do still remember her as well. I never was in her class, but she is still there teaching, although at this point, she is discussing retirement. Or at least it mentions it on her teacher page as she states that she has taught many of the students parents, but would retire before their children had a chance to attend the school.

Tomorrow I’ll have to cast a wider net and keep throwing it out there. I’m trying to get some packages out to schools as well, but figure that it is faster (and far less expensive) to send some information out via email and then for those who express an interest I can send a marketing package out.

All for now – more emails to write.
———————————————————————————————–
